Skies Over Sweetwater
Keene Publishing is proud to announce the publication of Skies Over Sweetwater by Julia Moberg. Bernadette Thompson (Byrd to her friends) is 18, the year is 1944, and she is about to fulfill her life-long dream: to become an Air Force pilot. Leaving her poverty-stricken Iowa home, Byrd boards a train in route to Sweetwater, Texas—home of Avenger Field—where the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) training camp teaches women how to fly bombers, pursuits, trainers, and utility planes. At camp, Byrd meets Cornelia the rich girl, Sadie the college girl, and Opal the city girl. Together they struggle to master not only handling a plane, but some of life’s most
important challenges.
The WASP were the first women in history trained to fly American military aircraft. Still in their teens, these courageous pioneers, heroes in their own right, left their homes to serve their country doing what they loved to do—fly! Their story inspires us all to follow our dreams and find our own place in the world through courage, integrity, and passion. Readers of all ages will love the WASP’s story of achievement, friendship, and patriotism. Perfect for your Women's History Month reading list!
Hailing from Michigan and Texas, author Julia Moberg attended NYU where she earned both her B.F.A. and M.F.A. in dramatic writing. Julia learned of the WASP program, and impressed with the courage and fortitude of these pioneering women, she focused her writing skills on bringing this important part of American history to light. Skies over Sweetwater captures the essence of their lives and brings the story, in a very accessible format, to today’s readers. Julia continues to be amazed that so few people know that women flew for the Air Force during WWII. She hopes that this book might change that, and give the WASP pilots much deserved recognition. Julia currently lives in New York City, where she works as an editor in children’s book publishing. For more information, or to order a copy, click here.
Captain Wonder, Lou Gehrig, and Me
Keene Publishing is proud to announce the upcoming Spring publication of Captain Wonder, Lou Gehrig, and Me by Alex S. Kole. Travel with author Alex Kole on a sentimental journey back to a place in the Bronx where a malted cost a nickel and friends were worth a million. A memoir, written in the style made famous by the TV show, The Wonder Years (the narrator is present day Alex Kole, remembering back to his earlier years through the younger Alex), Captain Wonder, Lou Gehrig, & Me appeals to readers of all ages. We can all identify with four-year-old Alex getting his first bike, the boys playing stickball, the pre-teen with his club, and the young man at boot camp. And through it all—through the Great Depression, through the awkward teenage years, and through World War II—Alex, his friends and family, show us how to not just survive, but thrive. Thrive in a way that is often lost or over looked in today's fast-paced, instant gratification world. Without the Internet or Nintendo games to play, Alex and his friends used their imagination to create, and looked to heros such as Lou Gehrig and comic book characters like Captain Wonder as role models to a better future for all.
Unique features of this memoir include:
- Each chapter ends with a list of facts for that time in history, such as the price of bread, top news headlines, & the current President of the USA.
- Photos and other memoribilia from Alex's childhood as graphical elements to tell more of the story and document for historical purposes
- Key documents from that era, including text from Alex's diary he kept as a soldier in WWII
- Anecdotes and humor bring you back into these early years of our Nation's history
Reads like a novel, yet provides us all with an education on what life was like back in the 1930's and 1940's for much of our nation. An uplifting, feel good book, Captain Wonder, Lou Gehrig, & Me is one book you will read more than once.. For more information, or to order a copy, click here.
